Character History;

Mathew Bowman was born on the Corvis IV terraforming station to Rebecca Bowman and Mark Freidman.  Rebecca Bowman was director of the terraforming project, while his father was part of the team responsible for the stabilization of Corvis IV’s planetary atmosphere.  While the technical challenges of terraforming Rebecca Bowman continually referred to herself as a simple farmer.

Mat grew up following his parents initiate various terraforming projects until his parents separation when he was eleven years old.  Mat’s father followed a career that took him away from the terraform command,  and several lightyears away.  Mat continued to live with his mother, with sporadic contact with his father until he joined Starfleet.  For the majority of his adolescence, Mat lived aboard starships and planetary outposts, and spent more time in environmental suits than most teens spend hanging out.   Community is strong amongst terraformers and as Mat matured he was drawn into the community.  Dragging seismic stabilizers across the frozen glacier plain of Pacee III, to riding shotgun aboard shuttlecraft modified to herd comets in Bormis system.

Mat worked closely with the terraformers and  Starfleet crews, and made several close friends in Starfleet.  Mat was fascinated by the stories and experiences that the Starfleet crews discussed.  Encouraged by them he began working towards the Starfleet entrance requirements.  Bowman began learning protocols, Starfleet systems and sciences.  Bowman worked closely with the Starfleet crews, and was continually supported in his decision to apply at Starfleet.  Much to his mother’s dismay, it was during this time that Mat picked up orbital skydiving from a few crew aboard the U.S.S. Livingston, who after taking Mat for a few simple jumps over Pacee III, had a extended jump into the Pacee’s system turbulent gas giant, with a transporter recovery when the atmospheric pressure reached the threshold of the entry suits.

Captain Lorok, commanding officer of the U.S.S. Sheshatshiiu, sponsored bowman’s application to Starfleet. When he was of age, Bowman took the entrance exam and interview and was accepted into the Academy.  Bowman threw himself into the sciences, and based on his efforts was rewarded with a cadet cruise aboard a deep space survey under the command of Captain Voxan Rostars, the Andorian Captain of the U.S.S. Alexandria (NCC-45231-Excelsior-class).  The mission was a mapping expedition along  what the crew began calling the deep-range.  Bowman was assigned to the stellar cartography, and met Tamara – whirlwind romance J.  When Bowman’s assignment ended, so did the relationship, and both followed there careers to different assignments.

After the Academy, Bowman looked for another deep-space assignment, and was assigned to the U.S.S. Valdemar on a long-range core-ward exploration mission along the fringes of the Alpha and Beta quadrant boundaries.  Mat Bowman was promoted to full Lieutenant at the end of the mission and transferred to the U.S.S.  Pharos at Starbase 217.  Aboard the Pharos, Bowman finds himself on the bridge more than he ever had before.  Working closely with the Pharos’s science officer Cmdr. Gregore Charlois.  Also Bowman met Alica  Tyler, a civilian specialist aboard the Pharos.  When Bowman first met Alicia at an operations meeting, little did he know that in just over a year they would be getting married. It was a small ceremony, held at the Big, Blue Marble on Spacedock.  With the brilliant blue white Earth below them, Mat and Alicia where married by Captain Voxan Rostars.  The Bowman’s spent their remaining tour together aboard the Pharos, and were transfer to the U.S.S. Quinixitis when the Pharos returns to Earth for upgrading.  Like the Pharos, the U.S.S. Quinixitis was a Nebula-class vessel.  The Quinixitis was a new ship, and during the shakedown cruise Bowman is teamed with an engineering detail to assist with final system integration and maintenance.  The Quinixtis served along the frontiers of the Federation, establishing several outposts, re-supplying others, and updating navigational charts for the region.  The Quinixtis also visited several worlds as the Federation flagship during their inauguration to the UFP, and had a wide range of diplomatic and dignitary crew aboard.

Captain Martin Underhill rotated Bowman and his team through various duties aboard the Quinixitis and they became known as the troubleshooters onboard the vessel.  Bowman became very good friends with the Chief Engineer, Lt. Cmdr Brozam Herat, a tellerite, who gave the Bowman’s an elaborate Tellerite winding clock that he had designed and built himself.  While onboard the Quinixtiis, the Bowman’s talked about transferring back to Earth, or somewhere else in the Federation core.  Alicia Bowman accepted a position with the Daystrom Institute, and the Bowman’s were making arrangements for transport and transfer. Lt. Cmdr Herat transferred to the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Odyssey in 2369, as her chief engineer, and was killed aboard the  Odyssey in 2371, when a Jem’Hadar attack fighter rammed the vessel in the Gamma Quadrant.  The Bowman’s had last seen Herat, while visiting him and his family on Tellar in early 2371. With the Odyssey Incident, Starfleet began a rapid period of change and expansion.  Bowman was transferred from the U.S.S. Quinixtis, and after a few rapid placements aboard various starships and starbases.   Arriving at Starbase 375 to met a transfer vessel to Earth, Mat Bowman was offered a position as the Science officer aboard the U.S.S. Akron, a newly commissioned Steamrunner-class.  Alicia Bowman would have no part of the assignment, having grown tired of shipboard life, and continued to Earth, pleading for Mat to follow.  Mat refused, focused on his responsibility, and what he felt was a real need for experienced officers on front line vessels.  Alicia continued on to Earth, while Mat accepted the transfer to the Akron. Under the command of Captain Quinn Garis, the Akron was assigned to border patrol along the Cardassian border.  Briefly involved in several skirmishes with Klingon forces during the dissolution of the Khitomer Accords, the Akron was involved in several engagements during the outbreak of hostilities.  Operating along the frontier, communications with Alicia were few and far between.   Mat continued to tell Alicia that he would be coming home to her, as soon as he “finished up”.

The hostilities with the Klingon abated, only to be replaced by the threat of the Dominion.  The Akron was assigned to Starbase 375, and participated in several fleet maneuvers, and while Deep Space Nine fell to Dominion and Cardassian forces, was involved in the attack against Cardassian shipyards.  Alicia continued to ask Mat to get a transfer off the front lines, even to the point of moving from her placement, to a transfer he would enjoy.  Mat continued to refuse, and telling her to be reasonable during the war.  Shortly after that, Mat received the divorce papers, delivered courtesy of subspace.Bowman spent the rest of the war aboard the Akron, participating in several major engagements of the war, as well as the following occupation, and rebuilding of Cardassia Prime.  It was under the suggestion of his commanding officer that he transferred to the U.S.S. Venture, when his Captain Garis indicated that his talents where being wasted.
